CALEXICO - In an effort to cut into one of the highest unemployment rates in the state, Wells Fargo and Company gave The Neighborhood House of Calexico a $40,000 grant.
The money will go towards the organization's Micro Business Infrastructure Project. The project's main objective involves building new or expanding existing micro business in Imperial County.
The grant was presented in form of giant check and was handed over to the non-profit organization at Mexicali Hotdogs in Calexico.
The owner of Mexicali Hotdogs, Diane Benites, started here business by selling hot dogs from a cart. She sought help from The Neighborhood House and now owns and manages her own restaurant. With grants like the one presented today, she was able to expand her business and now offers customers a larger variety of food items.
Those in attendance included Wells Fargo executives, Councilman Luis Castro, and Calexico mayor, Daniel Romero.
"It permits members of the community who don't have the knowledge or the know-how on how to start up a business." Mayor Romero says. "They can come to The Neighborhood House, 'hey, I have a concept, I want to do business, can you help me?', and of course the answer is yes."
Councilman Castro knows the importance of the relationship between Wells Fargo and the community.
He says, "There is a lot of need here in the valley, and especially here in Calexico. this is something that the families, the people, the community needs to do so that they can live and work here in Calexico. thank you to Wells Fargo for the donation."
For residents like Diane Benites, The Neighborhood House is an opportunity worth taking.
