Yuma--Summer is a peak time for drownings but a local fire department said those deaths could be preventable.
August has been proclaimed "Drowning Impact Awareness Month" in the City of Yuma.
The purpose is to raise awareness of the number of cases and the impact of child drownings in Arizona.
Yuma fire department says children under 4 years old are in the highest risk group.
Fire officials said the most basic steps come down to constant, responsible, focused and adult supervision.
They said to never leave a child unattended around water even if its just a few seconds.
"Every year in Arizona, we lose an equivalent to a classroom full of children to drownings," Kayla Holiman, YFD fire inspector said.
Barrier fencing is another important safety factor for children around any time of pool.
