Yuma, AZ - A curbside recycling program may be in Yuma's near future, but the city wants to know if people really support the idea.
The Yuma City Council passed a motion authorizing the City Administrator to negotiate a contract for recycling services.
A select number of customers will be mailed a survey. If you don't receive one by mail you can fill one out online on the city website or you can do it in person at City Hall.
The survey has only 3 questions. The city wants to know if residential solid waste customers would be okay with one garbage and one recycle pick up a week, if they would be willing to pay more and if they are residents of the city.
Dave Nash with the City of Yuma says curb side recycling could benefit the community and the environment.
There are some estimates in the industry that say up to 70% of items in garbage could be recycled. So if that's the case we definitely want to try and get some of that out of there not keep filling up our landfills. This also would save money on what they call the tipping fee to discharge that material into a landfill. It's better for us in the long run," says Nash.
Currently if people want to recycle they have to take their items to either of the two drop off locations in Yuma. The city says more people would maybe recycle if it were easier to do.
One Yuma resident agrees.
"It could help the environment, here there's a lot of problems with a lot of people not recycling," says Jesus Toafoya.
The city says input from residents may help in the negotiation process with the vendor. They say they may reach out again as some of the details begin to take shape.
The city is asking for people to get the surveys in as fast as possible, the last day to submit is September 13th.
