Weekend Rollover Caused by Inattentive Driver

WINTERHAVEN, CA - We now know what caused a rollover accident this weekend sending several people to the hospital.

The California Highway Patrol says the driver of a white Mercury Mountaineer is at fault for a two vehicle accident on Interstate 8 just east of Seminole Road in Winterhaven. They say the driver became inattentive while reaching for a water bottle.

CHP says the driver drifted from the slow lane while traveling westbound and crashed into a Chevy Silverado going the same direction. The driver of the SUV then lost control of the vehicle and rolled off the highway.

Police say three people had to be extricated from the white SUV and three others were able to get out on their own. They say in total eight people were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.

CHP continues to investigate the accident and no citations have been issued.
