Timeline from Sunday's storm that caused more that 17,000 in the Foothills area to be without power. Via APS
- At about 5 p.m. Sunday a major storm hit the Yuma area, initially impacting about 19,000 APS customers. As of midnight, the total number of customers without service stood at about 17,000. Of that total, about 14,000 reside in the Foothills area east of Yuma.
- Severe winds took down more than 60 power poles, including both sources that deliver power into the Foothills substation. APS crews in Yuma are being supplemented with personnel from Phoenix, Flagstaff, Casa Grande, Buckeye and other areas.
- Cleanup and repair of the damage is complicated by the fact that the damaged poles carry multiple lines at different voltage levels. APS's goal is to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.
- The initial focus is on restoring the sources of power to the Foothills substation as that will enable APS to bring the area with the largest number of customers back in service. APS's goal is to have the majority of the 14,000 customers served by the Foothills substation in service late evening Monday. Due to the severity of the damage, various outages may extend several days for some customers in both the Foothills area and other parts of Yuma. Thus, customers should prepare for the possibility of extended outages.
- APS will provide dry ice to those impacted by the outage beginning at 9 a.m. Monday at Wal-Mart store located at 8151 E. 32nd St. in Yuma. Customers are asked to bring a cardboard box or ice chest, and leather gloves or pot holders to safely transfer the dry ice.
- The Red Cross plans to establish an emergency relief center in the area. APS will communicate the location once it has been established.
