YUMA - Official identification of two MCAS Yuma marines killed in Afghanistan is still pending. The two service members were killed in an insurgent raid in Friday night's attack on Camp Bastion. Military sources tell KSWT the Department of Defense waits 24 hours after notifying family members before making casualty information public.
Camp Bastion was reportedly secured after Friday night's attack, but the insider attacks continue. Brigadier General Gunter Katz is spokesman for International Security Assistance Forces.
"In the early morning hours of today four ISAF service members have been killed by a members of the Afghan police, this incident is still under investigation," said Katz.
On Saturday, another fatal attack was carried out by Afghan local police.
"Yesterday in the late afternoon we had an insider attack where a member of the Afghan local police was killing two British soldiers, wounding another British soldier, the shooter has been killed during that incident," added Katz.
That brings the total number of ISAF service members killed since Friday to eight.
Military officials say Friday's attack started just after 10 p.m. when 15 to 18 insurgents executed a well-coordinated attack against the Camp Bastion Airfield. The insurgents were reportedly dressed in U.S. Army uniforms and armed with automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and suicide vests. Military officials say they were well-equipped, well-trained and well-rehearsed.
Six coalition AV-8B Harrier jets were destroyed and two were significantly damaged. Three coalition refueling stations were also destroyed.
Coalition forces fought back against the insurgents, killing all but one. The wounded insurgent was taken into custody.
