SOMERTON, AZ- A Somerton man is sentenced to prison for robbing a convenient store nearly a year ago.

Jesus Malta plead guilty to attempted aggravated assault last month.

On Wednesday morning, Yuma County Superior Court Judge Lisa Bleich sentenced Malta to 3 1/2 years.

He is accused of holding up a clerk with a shotgun at the Circle K on Main Street in Somerton last October. Malta was arrested 5 blocks away after he fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.

Officers also recovered the weapon and money near the 100 block of E. Cactus Street following Malta's arrest.

A Yuma County grand jury indicted Malta later that month on charges of aggravated assault, theft, armed robbery, and disorderly conduct.

Those charges were dropped per his plea agreement.
