Fire destroys building in downtown Brawley

Brawley, CA- The Brawley Fire Department says they were dispatched to the corner of 8th and G street around 10:30pm Thursday. It was an abandoned commercial building that was also home to a bar. (The bar was not in operation.)

Nearly 30 firefighters were on scene. The Interim Fire Chief says firefighters had to stay about 30ft away from the building because of its condition.

"Because it was 2 stories and an abandoned building, it had a heavy wood frame. There were embers flying and there was an exposure problem. We had to protect the surrounding businesses as well as the power lines that were near by," says Chuck Peraza, Interim Fire Chief -Brawley Fire Department.

No injuries were reported. The Brawley Fire Department says they are on scene today investigating the incident.

They say this fire is not connected to the one that destroyed a furniture store in downtown just 3 weeks ago.
