2 seriously injured in Wellton crash involving Border Patrol vehicle


Wellton, AZ- Police are investigating a crash involving a Border Patrol vehicle and golf cart.

It happened Wednesday evening just before 8 O'clock on Old US Highway 80 near Avenue 28E.

Wellton police say Charles Keiser and Pedro Noriega Jr. were traveling west on Old US Highway 80 when they were struck from behind by a Border Patrol vehicle being driven by Agent Nicolas Ramirez.

They say both the golf cart and Border Patrol vehicle had significant damage.

Keiser and Noriega were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Noriega was later flown to a Phoenix area hospital for treatment. Both remain hospitalized at this time.

Agent Ramirez was not injured in the collision.

No word yet on if any charges will be filed in this case.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office is assisting Wellton PD in their investigation.

Lt. Cannon Ball with the Wellton Police Department stated "Due to the significant injuries of the two subjects involved and the extensiveness of the collision scene, we are taking great care in how the investigation is conducted.  There are a lot of unknowns at this time that will not come to light immediately and we do not want to jump to conclusions as to what occurred on the night of the collision". 

Border Patrol released this statement in regards to the collision: At approximately 7:55 p.m., on Oct. 3, a Border Patrol agent was involved in a vehicle collision near Avenue 28 E and Old Highway 80 in Wellton, Ariz. We are fully cooperating with the investigating agencies and are referring any questions to the Wellton Police Department and/or Yuma County Sheriff's Office."

No other information about Agent Ramirez was released by Border Patrol at this time since the investigation is ongoing.

The Wellton Police Department is also asking anyone with information regarding the accident to contact Sgt. David Rodriguez at 785-4887.
