State Flags Lowered to Honor Fallen Soldier

PHOENIX - The state of Arizona is honoring a fallen U.S. soldier. Flags flew at half staff until sunset Sunday for Sgt. 1st Class Ryan J. Savard, 29, of Sierra Vista.

He was killed by small-arms fire yesterday while on patrol in Afghanistan. He was stationed out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer issued a statement Sunday saying in part,

"I ask that Arizonans join me in offering our sincere gratitude to Sgt. 1st Class Savard, and a prayer for his loved ones. Let us hold in our hearts the courageous men and women in uniform who remain in harm's way so that we can be safe and free."

State flags will again be lowered on the day of his funeral, which has not yet been scheduled.
