Local Students speak out at "Stop & Listen" Asthma Forum

EL CENTRO - In an effort to bring asthma awareness to the community of Imperial County, the Imperial Valley Child Asthma Program hosted its "Stop & Listen" Asthma Forum on Wednesday evening.

3 local high schools participated in the event.

Calexico, Brawley and Southwest High School, all had 3 students give a presentation on the severity of asthma in the Imperial Valley.

"What they did was research the asthma problem here in our community", says I.V.C.A.P. Director, Aide Mungia-Fulton. "They are bringing their findings to the forum today".

The presentations were given in front of local community leaders, city and county officials as well as health department representatives.

The groups were given the task of going out and deeply researching how serious asthma is in a county in which agriculture is the largest industry.

Aide says that a lot of people, especially leaders in the community, in the Imperial Valley don't know about the asthma problem in the community.

"When we host these kinds of forums, we bring them together" says Aide. "We have the youth speak up about the problems, they have a stronger voice. We want them to know that there is a problem and we gotta start doing something about it. We need to improve the quality of life for those kids that suffer from asthma".

Calexico High School took first place in the presentations. They took home a certificate and 500 dollars.
