SOMERTON, AZ - The Southwestern Defense Alliance is a consortium of 18 people, comprised of three hand-picked individuals from governors in six southwestern states.
Tonight, a conference reception for retired and active military was held. They're working together to keep all of Yuma's great military and aerospace assets intact.
The SWDA conference held a reception tonight at the Cocopah Conference Center between six-thirty and eight o'clock this evening.
The group spent the day touring MCAS Yuma, as well as the Yuma Proving Grounds.
Lt. Gen. John Regni says the group is arming themselves with information.
"What we're really all about is making sure we fully understand all the military and Department of Defense and Department of Energy assets within the southwest regions of the United States," says Regni.
Those assets include MCAS Yuma, the Yuma Proving Ground and NASA projects based in Yuma. There was also buzz tonight about the new F-35B fighter jet due to be officially introduced at MCAS Yuma next Tuesday.
Lt. Gen. Regni says the SWDA's mission is to provide Washington with the facts about the great military and aerospace assets in Yuma, and keep them intact, as potentially steep defense cuts loom ahead.
