Yuma police say several apartments report stolen rent checks

Posted: Updated:

Yuma--The Yuma Police Department is investigating reports of rent payment thefts taken out of drop boxes at several apartment complexes.

YPD says the rent drop boxes were broken into between November 3rd and 7th.

David Kotin, broker at KK Realty, manages five apartment complexes in Yuma.

He said about 20 residents were affected.

"It's unfortunate that it interferes with the conveniences of the rent drop but we're taking action to ensure it wont occur again in the future," Kotin said.

Kotin said checks and money orders in rent drop boxes from Villanueva, Villa Serena, La Ramada, La Posada and Terracina apartments were stolen.

"We're proceeding as if its our money that has been stolen," he said.

Kotin said they're working with residents to prove rent was made for the month.

Kotin said none of the victims will have to pay late fees or risk getting evicted.

"I'm shouldering the burden of the problem. I do not wish my residents to be displaced over potentially stolen rent money," he said. " The only problems that might occur if there's no receipt available."

YPD asks anyone with information regarding the case of anyone who may be a victim to please call them or 78-crime.
