Calipatria--Nine inmates are in the hospital with moderate to serious injuries after a prison riot.

It happened Saturday afternoon at the Calipatria State Prison.

A prison spokesman said hundreds of inmates were involved.

It all started when an inmate started stabbing a group of prisoners with a sharpened toothbrush.

Correctional officers activated the yard alarm to stop the fight.

Then another fight involving 90 inmates broke out in the dining hall.

Inmates were using anything handy as weapons like broken food trays and broom handles.

The prison has been placed on lock down.

No prison guards were hurt.
