Police give out free VIN etching and holiday safety tips

YUMA, AZ - With the holiday in full swing, criminals are often looking for their next victim to steal from. That's why police officers were out giving holiday safety tips and offering free VIN etching to deter thieves from stealing your vehicle this holiday season.

Melissa Norred, YPD's Auto Theft Detective says they have no way of knowing how effective the measure is, but says it acts as a deterrent to car thieves. She tells KSWT News 13…"If somebody wants to steal a car and they want to sell it their going to have to change the VIN number or hide the identity of it this puts the identity on the windows which is very costly for them to have to replace all of them."

Residents were also able to sign up for the watch your car decal program. Participants receive free windows decals letting police know their vehicle is not usually driven between one and five in the morning when the majority of auto thefts occur.
