SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KSWT News 13) – A Mexican national was arrested Sunday night for attempting to smuggle empty ammunition magazines for assault weapons out of the United States.

Customs and Border Protection officers and Yuma County Sheriff's deputies conducting outbound operations at the Port of San Luis referred Jose Angel Palacios Hernandez, 20, of neighboring San Luis, Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico, for a secondary inspection of the Oldsmobile sedan he was driving.

Palacios was taken into custody after 80 ammunition magazines used for AK-47 assault rifles were located throughout the vehicle.

The vehicle and magazines were seized. Palacios was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
