KSWT News 13 - In an effort to reduce drunk driving and deadly accidents, the California Highway Patrol will kick off a five-day maximum enforcement period for the New Year's holiday.
CHP tells KSWT News 13 they are increasing checkpoints and patrol officers throughout the state.
El Centro's CHP sector will launch the enforcement period on Friday at 6 p.m., but will not be opening any new checkpoints in the area.
All officers available to patrol will be on duty.
During a similar effort over the Christmas holiday last week, CHP recorded 1,170 DUI arrests on roads it patrols, compared to 980 in 2011.
Fatalities during that period were 39, compared to 14 in 2011.
