Gang member arrested in Brawley teen's stabbing death

Gang member arrested in Brawley teen's stabbing death

Posted:

EL CENTRO, CA -   El Centro Police say they have arrested a known gang member for stabbing and killing a 17-year old Brawley High School football player over the weekend.

El Centro Police Commander Jeff Mason says witnesses came forward to provide key information that lead them straight to 19-year old Martin Gabriel Andrade who was hiding out in Heber. He says, "During the search warrant he was discovered inside and arrested. He was arrested taken inside to Imperial County Jail and booked on a charge of murder."

Andrade now faces murder charges for stabbing to death 17-year old Martin Garza a popular Brawley High School student. Last night hundreds of loved ones and classmates held a candle light vigil in Brawley in memory of their home-town football star. Mason says while the two were at the same place the night of the murder it only appears Andrade is a known gang member.

Mason tells KSWT was this case is gang related in the fact the suspect is a member of an El Centro street gang." He says "there wasn't any specific fight prior to the stabbing but they were at the same place at the same time. As for where the Garza was stabbed police say that is something they can't get into because it's sensitive to the investigation."

Mason also tells us Andrade was the target of an attempted murder investigation in 2012. Tonight, he's behind bars on a one million dollar bond.

For El Centro residents Andrade's arrest brings relief.  Claudia Cazares tells KSWT News 13, "I feel relieved. I have a 15 year old son also and a 3 year old, I feel relieved.

El Centro police tell me they got the guy they were looking for and do not believe any one else is involved in Martin Garza's stabbing death.
