YUMA, Ariz. (KSWT News 13) - A 74-year-old man is hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle near Fortuna Road and 28th Street.

It happened Tuesday around 10 am.

Yuma County Sheriff's Office says Francis Alexander Johnston, 74, was riding his bicycle westbound on 28th street.

Deputies say he failed to stop at a stop sign where 28th Street meets Fortuna Road.

Johnston's bike hit the right front passenger door of a blue Nissan Altima that was traveling northbound on Fortuna Road.

Deputies say Johnston was wearing a helmet when the crash happened, but fractured his ankle, scapula and face. He also had minor brain bleeding.

Johnston was transported by ambulance to Yuma Regional Medical Center, then later flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, where he is in serious but stable condition.

The driver of the Nissan, 26-year-old Roxana Martinez, suffered no injuries.

Yuma County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the cause of the accident. They tell KSWT News 13 alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
