Border Patrol bust man trying to smuggle $1,238,400 worth of cocaine

SALTON CITY, Calif. (KSWT News 13) - El Centro Border Patrol agents busted a man trying to smuggle $1,238,400 worth of cocaine through a checkpoint.

It happened early this morning, at 3:30 a.m.

A drug-detecting dog alerted agents to the car of a 53-year-old man driving through the Highway 86 checkpoint between Westmorland and Salton City.

Agents found 15 bundles of cocaine hidden in the gas tank.

The cocaine weighed 38.7 pounds and is worth $1,238,400.

The driver, who is a citizen of Mexico and Lawfully Admitted Permanent Resident card holder, was arrested. 

The car and cocaine were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
