Jodi Arias' defense costs taxpayers more than $1.4 million

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Jodi Arias' defense for her murder trial has so far cost taxpayers more than $1.4 million.

Maricopa County officials released the figure Thursday after a judge ruled in favor of several media organizations seeking the information.

The records reveal the total hours billed by her court-appointed attorneys, but don't offer detailed billing information, such as how much specific expert witnesses are being paid.

The exact figure is $1,402,668.84.

Arias faces a possible death sentence if convicted of first-degree murder in the 2008 killing of Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix home. Authorities say she planned the attack on her lover. Arias initially denied involvement then blamed it on two masked intruders. Two years after her arrest, she said it was self-defense.

Her trial has been ongoing for about three months.
