Mayor Al Krieger announces he will not seek re-election

Posted: Updated:

YUMA, Ariz. (KSWT News 13) - In a surprise announcement Monday, Yuma City Mayor Al Krieger says he will not seek re-election. This news comes just two weeks after the mayor told us he planned to run for a second term.

The mayor tells KSWT News 13 this was a difficult decision for him. He did enjoy serving the community for the last eight years and will complete his term that is over at the end of the year.

He says he is proud of the work he did but he thinks it is time to move on.

"At the end of this year it will be eight years, and that's enough," Mayor Krieger said. He was one of the first incumbents to pick up a nomination packet to seek re-election. But now he is the first to officially declare he is not running for the City's top office.

Mayor Krieger, when asked what made him change his mind about running, said the cost-benefit analysis was a contributing factor, as well as that he spent a lot of time away from his home and family.

It's been over a year since the other six council members voted to investigate the mayor for abusing his power.

He has yet to be charged with wrong-doing.

Still, Mayor Krieger tells KSWT News 13 his political opponents on the City Council and the investigation against him did not affect his decision.

KSWT News 13 asked Mayor Krieger is he feels his opponents got the best of him. He said no.

"They don't. Not even close. That's not the point of being the mayor. I work for the community and if that's the point of these council members and the administrator to get the best of me, well apparently they have failed," he said.

Mayor Krieger says he will finish his current term that ends at the end of the year.

Although Mayor Krieger wants to take a break to focus on family and work, he says he hasn't ruled out the possibility of running for office in the future.
