Travel advisory warns drivers to stay off roads

Posted: Updated:

EL CENTRO, CA (13 On Your Side) - The California Highway Patrol has a travel advisory recommending that high-profile vehicles and commercial vehicles pull over and stay off the roadways.

They say if you do intend to drive, you should do so within your ability and the circumstances of the weather.

They also say it is at your own risk if you do decide to drive. Winds and dust can make it difficult to see the roads and can be very dangerous.

"There's no reason to be driving out casually. This weather is pretty extreme," says Sgt. McNamara with the California Highway Patrol, "you'll actually incur damage to your vehicle just from the sand hitting the windshield as well as the paint."

So far, there has been at least four reported accidents - most of them on the highways. This morning a semi-truck tipped over westbound on the I-8 in Ocotillo - but that has been cleared.

Several trees in the area have fallen due to the intensity of these winds. Winds are expected to last until 8 p.m.
