Police and DEA team up for prescription drug take back initiative

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) - Yuma police gave local residents the opportunity to clear out their medicine cabinets Saturday.

The Yuma Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration teamed up for the National Take Back Prescription Drug Initiative.

The annual event gives residents a chance to get rid of any old prescription drugs or other medications by handing them off to law enforcement who disposes of them properly.

Officer Joe Franklin with the Yuma Police Department says "We don't want people flushing some of these medications down into the water system and stuff. It's a safe way to get rid of the medications and that's our goal."

In case you missed Saturday's prescription take-back, you can still drop off your old prescriptions at a box that will remain at the Yuma Police Department.
