YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – With summer coming, more and more people are jumping into the water to cool off.

But this year, there has already been one reported drowning from a child slipping and falling into a swimming pool.

Despite swimming being a great way to beat the heat, failure to use proper precautions when swimming could cause loss of life.

Here are a few safety tips that can keep you safe and enjoying your time in the water.

Charly McMurdie, a spokeswoman with Rural Metro Fire Department, says a lack of attention to children swimming is one of the main causes of drowning accidents.

She also says children should avoid swimming near suction drains located on swimming pool floors.

"Take the extra step and teach everybody in the house hold some basic safety tips," McMurdie said.

Some of these are to avoid swimming alone, running near the pool, or setting items you might slip on near the pool.

Arizona ranks fourth highest in reported drownings each year.

A little extra precaution can save you and your loved ones from becoming victims.
