Temporary 1 cent Ariz. sales tax ends today

Posted:

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona shoppers and businesses will have extra cash in their pockets starting this weekend after a temporary 1 cent sales tax expires.

The 3-year tax voters approved in 2010 brought more than $900 million a year into the state's coffers and helped the state avoid bigger budget cuts during the height of the recession.

Gov. Jan Brewer pushed the Legislature to ask voters to approve the tax during the depths of the recession as plummeting state revenues triggered massive state budget cuts. Voters approved the tax in a May 2010 special election by a 64% to 36% margin.

An effort last year to get voters to extend the tax to pay for education failed in November.

Brewer plans to celebrate Friday's expiration with an event at the Capitol.
