Police say high-risk sex offender has a new home in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) - Police want you to know about a convicted sex offender with a high risk to re-offend who has moved to a new neighborhood.

Police say 42-year-old Steven Thomas Varela is now living at 355 East 20th Street in Yuma, Arizona.

In 1989, Varela faced charges for sexual conduct with a minor, aggravated assault and burglary after a police investigation found that he had molested a 9-year-old girl who he did not know.

Varela entered a plea agreement with the Yuma County Superior Court for attempted sexual conduct with a minor. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

After serving time behind bars, Varela was released in 2003.

Police consider him a level three sex offender, with a high risk to re-offend. They have been distributing flyers throughout the neighborhood.
