Yuma forced to alter budget after census error on San Luis prison count

Posted: Updated:

YUMA, AZ - An error in the 2010 U.S. Census is forcing Yuma officials to alter their proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The Census mistakenly counted the population of a 2,400-inmate state prison as being in Yuma.

The prison is actually in San Luis, and the subtraction of the inmates from Yuma's population means the city is entitled to less population tax funding shared by the state.

City Finance Director Pat Wicks says Yuma will have to subtract $400,000 of projected revenue from the $155 million budget.

He says that'll result in changes to the budget but not major ones.
