'Sopranos' Star James Galdofini dies at 51

Emmy-award winning actor James Gandolfini, best known for his portrayal of Tony Soprano on the HBO mobster drama "The Sopranos," died, HBO confirms. He was 51.

In a statement, HBO spokesperson Mara Mikialian said Gandolfini died of a possible heart attack while vacationing in Italy.

"We're all in shock and feeling immeasurable sadness at the loss of a beloved member of our family," the network said. "He was special man, a great talent, but more importantly a gentle and loving person who treated everyone no matter their title or position with equal respect. He touched so many of us over the years with his humor, his warmth and his humility. Our hearts go out to his wife and children during this terrible time. He will be deeply missed by all of us."

Gandolfini won three Emmys for his portrayal of a conflicted New Jersey mobster. According to Deadline, he was in the works to star in a new limited series for HBO, called Criminal Justice.

He is survived by his wife Deborah, and two children.
