Police still looking for tips in 'La Mesa' unsolved murders

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – Eight years ago, a family's life was forever changed and so was our community.

Today we remember the victims, an entire family including four children, who were killed in what is known locally as the La Mesa Street Murders.

To this day, no one has been brought to justice.

Police responded to a home on La Mesa Street just before 8:30 pm on June 24, 2005.

The 911 operator was flooded with calls from neighbors saying they heard yells for help.

When police arrived, they found 35-year-old Luis Rios in the backyard. He had been shot multiple times.

Inside, police found a mother and her four young children dead.

Autopsy reports showed the mother and three of the children were suffocated.

A six-year-old child was shot in the head.

Rio's blue Dodge Durango was stolen from the home.

The next day, police found it parked on Sixth Avenue and 21st Street.

Police released a composite sketch of a man who was seen entering the home the night of the murders.

Again, this murder remains unsolved.

Detectives hope that by keeping this case in the public eye, someone who may know something will come forward with new information that will lead them to the killer.

If you have any information on this case, please contact the Yuma Police Department of 78-CRIME.
