YMCA new center opens; will hire 16 new employees

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) - A big, better and improved YMCA officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art facility in Yuma today.

The new YMCA will be able to increase its membership from serving 4,000 people to 12,000.

That's three times its previous size.

13 On Your Side attended the grand opening ceremony.

Executive Director Chris Wheeler tells 13 On Your Side he plans to hire an additional 16 employees to meet the growing demand to promises to come with the new facility.

The Yuma YMCA received more than $750,000 through donations to fund the new facility, located on 32nd Street near Avenue A.

Wheeler says the YMCA's new indoor aerobics room is the largest in the city.

The new facility also comes complete with a fresh set of free weights lining its walls.

Wheeler says that from start to finish, construction took about three months, and with the added features, the new facility will see an even bigger increase in community use.

"Were already seeing significant numbers pick up, static membership on any given day. In any given month, we see about 12,000 gate visits. That's 12,000 people walking through the door. I think people are finally able to appreciate what ‘the Y' is going do. We're so much more than a gym. We have so much more to offer."

There will be larger rooms for aerobics classes, an expanded playroom for children and equipment that produces less harmful strain on the body while maximizing your workout.
