How to keep your pets safe during the Fourth of July holiday celebrations

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) - It's a time for celebration and that usually means using fireworks to mark our independence.

Unfortunately, it's that very same display that frightens our furry family members.

Each year, the loud suonds force animals to flee, usually ending up on the streets miles away from home.

Pet owners are asked to take extra precaution on this Independence Day holiday and secure their pets.

Taking these small steps may protect those we consider to be more than just a pet:

  • Make sure your pets have ID's.
  • Keep your pets indoors and avoid taking them to fireworks diplays, where they may become frightened.
  • Don't leave your pets unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. They may escape, panic or get hurt.
  • If you know your pet is easily distressed by loud noises like thunder, talk to your vet about ways to help.
