Arizona and California increase DUI patrol for holiday weekend

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) - Law enforcement officers across Arizona and California will be out in full force looking for drunken drivers during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Authorities urge people to use designated drivers or call for a ride to avoid getting a DUI.

Federal statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that alcohol-related crashes kill someone in the United States every 53 minutes.

The California High Patrol is currently in a maximum enforcement period, with extra patrol out on the roads working to pull over drunk drivers.

The maximum enforcement period began last night and will continue through Sunday, July 7, at 11:59 pm, since many will have a four-day weekend because of the holiday.

Officers say last year's maximum enforcement period was only 30 hours long and resulted in nine deaths.
