Gay marriage initiative in Arizona goes dormant

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - An initiative campaign to have Arizona voters decide next year whether to legalize gay marriage has been put on hold amid reluctance by national and local advocacy groups to back the measure.

Campaign co-chair Erin Ogletree Simpson says volunteers continue to collect signatures but that the campaign is now largely dormant as backers try to gain support from other groups before moving forward.

The Arizona Capitol Times (http://bit.ly/1dylPzR ) reports that advocacy groups say the timing isn't right because the measure would go on the ballot when turnout for a midterm election would be comparatively low.

Sheila Kloefkorn of the Human Rights Campaign says that group won't support the initiative. She says there's increased support in Arizona for gay marriage but not enough to win in 2014.
