California health insurance marketplace website now open

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California's new health insurance marketplace is getting its first test as consumers begin shopping online as part of President Barack Obama's federal health care overhaul.

The law known as "Obamacare" will offer private insurance to people who have been rejected because of a pre-existing condition and offer subsidies for those who cannot afford to buy their own insurance.

About 5.3 million Californians who are eligible can begin applying Tuesday through Covered California.

Still, officials do not expect a wave of applications immediately because comparing the plans and filling out the application will be time-consuming.

It marks the most extensive change to the nation's health care system since Medicare and Medicaid became law in 1965.

Glitches are possible, especially if too many people try to access the website, .
