Man who fled to Mexico after kidnapping his own baby appears in court

Posted: Updated:

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – It was an emotional day in court for a father arrested for kidnapping his own baby.

23-year-old Raul Tejada made his initial appearance in court Thursday morning.

Tejada cried as a Yuma County judge read him his charges—including kidnapping aggravated assault on an officer and endangerment.

Deputies say Tejada kidnapped his baby, fled from deputies, tried ramming his car into them and then raced through the border, where he fled into San Luis, Rio Colorado.

Tejada dropped off his baby at his father's house.

A short while later, family members convinced him to turn himself in.

Tejada crossed back into the U.S., where deputies were waiting for him.

The baby is safe and has been returned to the mother.

Tejada remains behind bars on $250,000 bond.
