Body found near highway identified, few details released

IMPERIAL COUNTY, CALIF. (13 On Your Side) - The Imperial County Coroner's office has identified the body that was found of 111 near Calexico.

30-year-old David Navarro was found dead by a gunshot wound Tuesday morning.

But Sheriff's are keeping a tight lip on the details.

13 On Your Side confirmed through two different law enforcement sources that Navarro is a known gang member.

But what we still don't know is whether his death was gang-related or not. During a press conference at the sheriff's office in El Centro, officials did not go into detail about Navarro's death.

"At this time we are not going to be releasing any of the details of our criminal investigation other than the information I've provided," says Lt. Scott Sheappeard after we asked if the case was gang-related.

Deputy Steven Green also gave little information when asked if Navarro had other injuries, "at this point we're not releasing that information because it'll hinder the investigation."

So 13 On Your Side went to a storage facility close to where Navarro's body was found to ask if employees saw or heard anything - but none of them wanted to talk.

We also caught up with Calexico Police Chief Pompeyo Tabarez. Given his experience with gang-related cases, he says homicides involving violence could be a sign of gang involvement.

We'd like to point out - Tabarez is not referring to Navarro's case.

"It could be an executions style type of homicide based on the gangs issues - but that won't be determined until the particular agency makes that determination."

Navarro's body was found near a barb-wire fence on Scaroni Road, near Highway 111

Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff's Office.
