AWC Matadors to play in El Toro Bowl

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – Despite being forced to forfeit five football games over a violation, the Arizona Western College Matadors are going bowling this year.

Today, a selection committee chose the Matadors to play in the annual El Toro Bowl.

Despite sanctions handed down from the NJCAA last month and three straight losses, two of them coming in the postseason, the Matadors will find themselves in a bowl game come December.

The Matadors coaching staff had been hoping for leniency since the NJCAA slapped the school with an infraction for failing to submit the proper paperwork for two transfer players.

As a result, the Matadors were forced to forfeit give games, ending the season with a 2-9 record.

Because the NJCAA does not have a rule prohibiting teams that finish under .500 from competing in a bowl game, the selection committee gave the Matadors an early Christmas present—selecting them to play in the El Toro Bowl.
