Two burglars shoot at resident; still on the loose

Posted: Updated:

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – A homeowner caught two men burglarizing his house, but when he tried to confront them, the two burglars started shooting at him as they took off in their car.

Investigators do not know who the burglars were or why they were in that house.

The only description they have is the car they drove off in—an older model silver two-door Honda or Toyota.

13 On Your Side spoke to one neighbor who said she heard gunshots.

"It sounded like fireworks going off, " said Yuma resident Jessica.  "It got louder as if it was close, and I told my kids to get in the house," she said.

Deputies say a resident living near 27th Street and 19th Avenue was returning home when he found a car parked in his driveway.

The resident noticed his screen door was open, and that the car was still turned on.

Deputies say the two burglars then ran from the backyard toward the car in his driveway.

The homeowner then tried to confront the burglars, but when he did they fired multiple rounds at him.

Nobody was injured.

Yuma County Sheriff's Office deputies say that if you ever find yourself in that situation, the best thing to do is call 911 immediately.

"Step back, contact your local law enforcement agency," said Public Information Officer Alfonso Zavala.

The two suspects remain on the loose and are considered armed and dangerous.

"I hope they can catch whoever was doing this because it scares me, there's just too many people getting killed," Jessica said.

Deputies did not say if the burglars got away with any valuables.

Again, they do not have any leads at this time.

They are asking anyone with information to call 78-CRIME to report a tip anonymously.
