Local first responders, law enforcement compete in "Turkey Bowl"

Local first responders, law enforcement compete in "Turkey Bowl" to raise funds for needy kids

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – It's not too often you see law enforcement and first responders come together to hit each other, have fun, and contribute to a great cause all at the same time.

But that's exactly what some members of the Yuma community did today.

Local law enforcement and first responders met up at Caballeros Park this morning to participate in the first-ever "Turkey Bowl."

The groups split up into teams and played against each other in a flag football tournament.

Border's Patrol's "The Stars" took home the trophy after they beat Yuma Fire Department's "Deer Antler Spray."

The competition got fierce on the field but at the end of the day, it was all for a good cause.

Together, the Turkey Bowl collected 155 toys and $160.

Each player participating in the football tournament donated a new toy as an entry fee.

Rural Metro Spokesperson Charly McMurdie says this is the first of hopefully many Turkey Bowls held here in Yuma to benefit "Toys for Tots," which delivers new toys to needy children at Christmas.

Participating teams represented Rural Metro Fire Department, Yuma Proving Ground Fire Department, Yuma Fire Department, the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, Winterhaven Fire Department, MCAS Fire Department, Border Patrol and AWC's Fire Academy.

If you are interested in helping out the "Toys for Tots" cause, firefighters say you can drop off a toy at any of the Rural Metro Fire Department stations from now until December 20, 2013.
