Local business owners prepare for "Small business Saturday"

Local business owners prepare for "Small business Saturday"

Posted: Updated:

YUMA, Ariz. (13 On Your Side) – With all the big sales and huge markdowns during Black Friday, we often forget about the small businesses and the benefits they have on the local economy.

13 On Your Side reporter Karen Castro spoke to the owner of Dream Gift shop in Yuma (you can watch the full interview in the video above).

As you can imagine, it is extremely difficult to compete with a retail giant like Target and Best Buy.

But Joely Beck, the owner of Dream Gift, tells 13 On Your Side she thinks of different ways to attract customers—like buying high-end unique items.

Dream Gift has been in business for eight years and relocated to Yuma in 2007.

Beck says she makes it a point to buy items not found in other local stores, hoping to attract customers looking for unique items.

The store sells everything from baby gear to adult clothing and housewares.

But her struggle as a small business owner is keeping a consistent clientele coming in through her shop's doors.

It is especially hard during the summer months.

Beck says until this day, she is still making up for the slow summer months.

She mainly depends on winter and holiday traffic—hoping more people would shop locally.

Dream Gift, along with many other small businesses in downtown Yuma, will be taking part in both Black Friday and small business Saturday.

Dream Gift, for example, will be offering 10 percent off most items and a prize if you spend a certain amount of money.

Be sure to watch 13 On Your Side this Friday and Saturday, for the latest on holiday sales in town.
