EL CENTRO, CALIF. (13 On Your Side) - Officials have released some of the names of the people arrested during Wednesday's massive drug trafficking bust in Imperial Valley.
But as we previously reported, the arrests made in Operation Cerberus also included people in other Southern California counties, Arizona, and Oregon.
Most of these people faced a judge yesterday for an arraignment. But this operation isn't over yet. Officials say there's more arrests to come.
Federal agents arrested Mexicali resident Alicia Romero Sanchez yesterday as she attempted to cross the border in Calexico. They say she was not smuggling drugs at the time.
In the Valley, four people were arrested including: Andres Archiga-Davila, Jesus Elias Fuerte, Orlando De Leon, Fausto Fernandez Gamez, Laura German and Fernando Saldana - whose arrest 13 On Your Side was able to capture Wednesday morning.
According to court calendars, those arrested are facing charges varying from conspiracy to commit crimes, possession for sale of a controlled substance, and transportation and/or sale of a controlled substance.
Agents arrested 11 more people in other Southern California counties including Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside. They also arrested four people in Yuma County, Arizona.
At Wednesday's news conference, federal authorities spelled out their reason for targeting this area.
"We got a significant cell of the Sinaloa Cartel. A cell that was operating right here in the Valley. They were using the Valley as a transshipment point to smuggle their drugs into the United States," says William R. Sherman, DEA San Diego Special Agent in Charge.
District Attorney Gilbert Otero says agents seized illegal drugs with a street value of $96,000,000. Drugs included marijuana, cocaine and meth. They also seized more than four million dollars cash.
Agents say two people arrested in Fresno, California. They'll be transported to Imperial County. All arrested will be facing criminal charges.
