PHOENIX (AP) - A construction worker arrested in the killing of a 14-year-old Mesa girl who was assaulted, strangled and dumped in a trash container is being held without bond.

A judge Tuesday night ordered that 31-year-old Alex Anthony Madrid be held on suspicion of first-degree murder, sexual conduct with a minor and multiple other charges.

The judge also ordered that a lawyer be appointed to represent Madrid. Police have said he refused to talk to detectives about the death of Claudia Ann Lucero, whose body was found Friday.

According to Mesa police, the probable cause of death was strangulation and that Madrid was linked by DNA and other forensic evidence.

Police also say Madrid was an estranged friend of the girl's mother and had lived at the family's home at one time.
