New solar panel project sets to bring more power to the Imperial Valley

EL CENTRO, CALIF. (13 On Your Side) - The successful construction of a new solar power project is expected to provide electricity to about 12,000 homes in Imperial Valley.

The T-Solar Project was unveiled today after five months of construction.

This $75,000,000 project is the first in the United States for a solar energy company from Spain.

It brought over 200 construction jobs and up to 15 operational jobs to the local economy.

But according to Carl Stills from the Imperial Irrigation District, this project will provide health benefits to the community.

"It just takes the sun rays, converts it, puts it out, we invert it up, put it on the lines and use the energy."

Stills says, T-Solar does not produce green house gas emissions that other types of energy-generating plants produce.

"The more renewable energy we get - the cleaner the air."

This type of green energy is especially important to the Valley because of its poor air quality.

Stills says, over hot, scorching summer months - Valley residents use more energy to power their air conditioners.

He says, with clean solar panels being used to provide energy, there will be less pollution in the air - thus lowering lung-related illnesses.

"In the overall economic sense - it might actually be as cheap. Simply because you may not be paying a doctor's bill."
