Exercise program makes working out exciting for the new year

Posted: Updated:

IMPERIAL, CALIF. (13 On Your Side) - Every year Americans vow to lose weight or get into shape as part of their New Year's resolution. But not everyone manages to stay on the right track.

Flipping tires, sprinting up and down the street, non-stop circuits. Crossfit Imperial Valley is one gym sure to whip you into shape.

"It was like 8 minutes of work out and the next day I was sore all over."

Jessica Bayardo may be considered a rookie when it comes to training Crossfit - but it's the spontaneity that keeps her coming back.

"It's different every day. And I like that. I like that I don't have to think about it. I can just come here. I'm prepared and it's going to hurt the next day but it's still going to be fun."

According to a poll done by the Pew Research Center, 12% of Americans want to exercise more as part of their New Year's Resolution and 11% want to lose weight. @

But studies also show only 8% of Americans actually achieve their goals.

Crossfit Imperial Valley owner Mallee Sato says people tend to get bored with their workout routine so they give up. But says, that's not the case at her gym.

"We like to do different workouts and that keeps people interested whereas maybe at a normal global gym you might do the same workout once a week and repeat it, so it gets a little bit boring."

Crossfit includes metabolic conditioning, gymnastic movements and weightlifting within each workout. Sato says these out-of-the-ordinary workouts will keep you wanting more.

"It's very practical. So I think people like it because they come in and do movements that are different every single day that pertain more to every day life rather than isolated movements."

She admits Crossfit can be a little intimidating, but the environment is more friendly than competitive.

"We try to do things together - sort of as a family and people hang out and encourage each other to finish their work outs. it's very family-oriented."

As for Bayardo, her New Year's resolution will not include giving up. "I've seen personal progress so continuing to do that - to push myself every day. to work up on weights, to get faster."
