El Centro CHP officer saves baby

EL CENTRO, Calif. (13 On Your Side) - A California Highway Patrol officer was in the right place at the right time on New Year's Eve and helped save a choking baby.

It happened December 31, at around 11:15 pm.

The mother of the baby, 33-year-old Itza Perea, noticed her baby was gasping for air and convulsing as they were driving on a highway near El Centro.

They immediately pulled over, and she ran into CHP's office in El Centroscreaming for help.

California Highway Patrol Officer Sal Acevedo was in the office, which was already closed, and ran to the front door.

According to Officer Acevedo, the baby was unconscious at this point and no longer breathing.

He took the baby and started performing emergency medical procedures until the baby regained consciousness and started crying.

Gold Cross Ambulance then transported Perea and the baby to the hospital for further evaluation.
