Utah grandmother surrogate for daughter's baby: 58-year-old's first grandchild
Story by 13 On Your Side Newsroom
A Utah grandmother became a surrogate mother to give her daughter and son-in-law the baby they so desperately wanted. Julia Navarro, the 58-year-old grandmother, is carrying her granddaughter for her 32-year-old daughter Lorena McKinnon who wasn't able to carry a baby to full-term, according toe Canadanow.com on Jan. 8.
Lorena and her husband have tried in vitro fertilization and have endured a dozen failed pregnancies. When the realization set in that the couple would not have a baby of their own, they decided to use a surrogate.
Julia stepped in after friends of her daughters declined to become a surrogate. She had seen her daughter suffer through close to a dozen miscarriages, with the longest pregnancy lasting only 10-weeks, so Julia knew it was time to help. The baby is due in just a couple of weeks.
Julia's offer to carry a child for her daughter entailed her going through three months of hormone shots. She needed to meet with psychologists, as did her daughter and son-in-law.
Her daughter egg was fertilized with her husband's sperm. Once it was implanted, Julia took care of the rest, making sure she stayed healthy for a healthy baby to be born. Because of her age she was given a less than 50/50 chance of this pregnancy being successful, but she beat the odds.
Julia will be giving birth to her first grandchild. The soon-to-be-grandmother told the media that she is carrying the baby for her daughter and son-in-law because "As a family, we have to help each other."
Some might say that Julia's going above and beyond, but as far as she is concerned giving birth to her granddaughter for her daughter makes her just as happy as her daughter to be doing this.
