Facebook turns 10

Facebook turns 10

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — It's hard to believe that Facebook has only been around for a decade. It's even harder to imagine modern life without the social media giant.

Facebook was founded on Feb. 4, 2004 and turns 10 years old today.

To celebrate, the site posted a video of kids at a birthday party with a message of gratitude to its users: "Our 10th birthday only happened because of all your friendships, stories and memories along the way. Thank you."

Additionally, the site has created an application that automatically produces a personalized look back at a person's time on the site.

In the past decade, the social networking site has grown from its humble roots in the dorm room of a Harvard University sophomore to a massive, publicly traded corporation with more than a billion users worldwide.

But some wonder whether the best days are already behind the Internet mega force.

Like many people her age, Shannon Harkins, a pre-med student at Georgetown, first joined Facebook as a teen. She now uses the site to keep in touch with friends she made in high school and while studying abroad.

After all these years, however, she says the site is still "useful, but not as cool."

Many student complained to WNEW reporter George Mesthos that their parents spend almost as much time on Facebook as they do. And because of that, many feel the bloom is off the rose for founder Mark Zuckerberg's site.

Harkins laughingly confessed her 60-something parents are regular Facebook users.

Naturally, this can cause problems for the younger college crowd.

"They see everything," said sophomore Shaquille James, "everything."
