2014 Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation Presented at Michigan State Capitol

LANSING, Mich., May 7, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Scott Woosley, executive director of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), and State Historic Preservation Officer Brian Conway presented 12 recipients with 2014 Governor's Awards for Historic Preservation today in the state capitol.

"Historic preservation is vital to Michigan," Woosley said. "It is vital to the quality of life of our citizens; to the vitality and economic strength and stability of our communities; to maintaining the unique characteristics of our cities, towns and rural areas; and to the sense of who we are as Michiganders. Historic preservation keeps us authentic."

Since May marks National Historic Preservation Month, Conway said it is a time when people across the country recognize the importance of preserving historic buildings and archaeological sites.

"The Governor's Awards help educate the public about the impact of historic preservation and the transformative effect it has on communities," Conway said. "Historic preservation teaches us about the past, brings tourists to town and helps put older vacant buildings back on the tax rolls."

One 2014 project, the rehabilitation of the H. V. Mutter Building in Pontiac, converted a structure that had been abandoned for decades into affordable housing, a fresh market and a health club. The project pumped $20 million into Pontiac. Developers used Federal and Enhanced State Historic Preservation Tax Credits and other incentives. It was the largest development in Pontiac in 30 years.

In Michigan between 2003 and 2013, historic rehabilitations using the federal historic preservation tax credits resulted in more than $1.7 billion in investment. In 2013, completed historic rehabilitation projects in Michigan alone totaled $146 million in investment.

The 2014 recipients are:

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, Cornerstone Architects, and BCI Construction for the rehabilitation of the Lake Michigan Beach House, Ludington State Park
  • Dr. John Hand and the late Nancy Hand for their stewardship of the Frederick Kennedy Jr. Farm, Hanover Township, and the Hugh Richard House, Jackson
  • Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation, Inc., for the restoration of Pere Marquette Railway Steam Locomotive No. 1225, Owosso
  • Lafayette Place Lofts, LLC., West Construction Services, and TDG Architects for the rehabilitation of the H. V. Mutter Building, Pontiac

Wayne State University, Quinn Evans Architects and McCarthy & Smith Inc. for the restoration of the McGregor Pond & Sculpture Garden

The State Historic Preservation Office, part of MSHDA, initiated the award program in 2003 to recognize outstanding historic preservation achievements reflecting a commitment to the preservation of Michigan's unique character and the many cultural resources that document Michigan's past.
