PHOENIX (KSWT-TV 13OYS) -- Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne has filed a cease and desist letter demanding that the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stop transporting adult immigrants and their children from Texas to Arizona.

The DHS began transporting hundreds of undocumented immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala over Memorial Day weekend and then releasing them at Greyhound bus stations in Tucson and Phoenix because the Border Patrol lacked the manpower to handle the surge of immigrants from Central America.

According to Horne, the immigrants are given notices to report to the nearest ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) office within 15 days. He said abandoning the immigrants in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees is posing significant health risks both to the immigrants and the communities in which they are being stranded.

"Not only were these inadvisable and irresponsible actions done without notifying Arizona officials, but DHS has yet to explain why it is apprehending aliens in Texas, moving them some 1200 miles and simply releasing them in our state," said Horne. "There does not appear to be any lawful authority for such actions, and I am demanding it immediately stops."

On Tuesday, Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake also sent a letter demanding answers from DHS. They asked for more information on how many immigrants were transported to Arizona, why they are being released at bus stations, and how the DHS plans to track immigrants who disappear or commit crimes after their release.

On Monday, Governor Jan Brewer sent a letter to President Obama attacking his administration for failing to notify her before transporting illegal immigrants from Texas and dropping them of in Arizona.

"I am deeply concerned about this troubling policy and the adverse impact on the illegal aliens, as well as to Arizona," Brewer wrote.

In the meantime, Horne said his office is aggressively looking into what legal remedies are available to allow for a federal lawsuit.
